Fantasy Festival number 5: The lineup

Lydmor: Danish composer and musician Jenny Rossander is well known in her home country, but didn't really start to be known in the UK until she released her album I told you I'd tell them our story back in 2018. She makes expansive, emotional electro pop, and you can read more about her here and here.

Pink Milk: Atmospheric Swedish noise merchants Pink Milk will be no strangers to regular readers of this blog. Their debut 2017 album Purple was an icy cacophony swirling through the music scene that year, and while they have been quiet of late, they have more than earned their place in a Fantasy Festival lineup. You can find them over on Bandcamp.

Pale Honey: Swedish grunge duo Nelly Daltrey and Tuva Lodmark were included in 2017's Fantasy Festival series, around the time they released their second album, Devotion. They've been teasing us with new material over the past year so it's to be expected that a third album may well be imminent. You can find out more here.

Grace Mitchell: Grace is another performer who I included in my 2017 Fantasy Festival lineup who has been a bit quiet since. Signed to Taylor Swift and Lorde's record label, she released a series of EP's and stand alone tracks (including the 2017 protest song 'The Kids (Ain't Alright)') that saw her poised to be the next great up and coming left of centre pop star. Here's hoping she's been quiet because she's working on something.

Allie X: Canadian singer/songwriter and visual artist, Allie X, has been bubbling under for a while now. 2020's Cape God album of dystopian synth pop has been well received, and, were things not as they are it would be expected that she would be touring the shit out of it, and probably performing at a number of festivals this summer. You can read a review of the album here.

Niki & The Dove: Swedish duo Niki & The Dove, following ten years of dramatic indietronica have, again, been a bit quiet recently. An alternative version of 'Sister Brother Mother Father' from 2016's album Everybody's Heart Is Broken Now, was released last year, signalling perhaps that they might be working on something but, for now, fans wait.

Sigrid: Norwegian singer/songwriter Sigrid was crowned BBC Music's Sound of 2018 and, since then, she's gone on to release a critically acclaimed pop album (including the legendary 'Don't Kill My Vibe'), do at least one stadium tour, and provide a refreshingly sunny take on Gen Z life. You can find out more here.

Songs of the year, number 24: Pale Honey - Set Me Free

It's been a largely quiet year for Pale Honey, during which Tuva and Nelly have been "Writing songs, studying and working" according to their website, while Anders has been mixing and producing. They are working on their third album, the follow up to 2017's well received Devotion.

'Set Me Free' snuck out about a month ago and it instantly excited me, with it's insistent bassline and anthemic melody, this is a tune that will endure. It also bodes well for album number three, which we should see in 2020.

Pale Honey - Get These Things Out Of My Head (Official Video)

Gothenburg band Pale Honey are currently touring with our friends Pink Milk (whose album I now have!) in Sweden, but will be playing a London show at The Old Blue Last on November 7. Their second album, Devotion, is out now and this single, 'Get These Things Out Of My Head' captures life on the road for the band, as well as providing a taster of the album. It is, in their words, 'Heavy', but is also an exhilarating ride.

Fantasy Festival #4: The Confidence Festival - Lineup

Katy Carr: Katy Carr is a London based singer/songwriter and multi instrumentalist with a sweet, powerful, commanding voice who draws on Polish history and traditional folk music to create music that can be both small and large in scale. Her album Polonia is out now and she will be appearing live at the Lexington in London on 1st October alongside Helen and The Horns and Honey Birch.

Helen McCookerybook: Helen McCookerybook began her musical life as a punk bass player in Joby in the Hooligans in 1977, she was later a bass player in The Chefs and guitarist in Helen and The Horns. She returned to music making about ten years ago and has just released her latest solo album The Sea. She is currently touring and will be playing The Lexington on the 1st October as part of Helen and The Horns, alongside Katy Carr and Honey Birch.

Pale Honey: Swedish duo Pale Honey are comprised of Tuva and Nelly. They have been a band for a couple of years now and have recently transitioned from noisy indie rock to a more glacial sound.  'Why do I always feel this way?' was a tense, epic and understated single, and their most recent release is a Pixies/Breeders esque rendition of ABBA's 'Lay All Your Love On Me'.

Basia Bulat: Basia Bulat is a Canadian singer/songwriter whose 2016 album Good Advice was one of Piccadilly Records picks of the year. I would liken her sound to a more indie sounding Adele, which sounds very odd given that Adele is signed to XL (an Indie Label). Basia is playing in Canada this summer.

Hollie Cook: Hollie Cook cut her musical teeth as a keyboard player in the final lineup of The Slits. She has since released two flawless albums of modern day lovers rock. Twice, the most recent of the two, was released in 2014.

Shonen Knife: Shonen Knife, the garage punk band from Osaka, have been around since the early 1990s. Feted by Kurt Cobain, the band have gone through a number of lineup changes but remain resolutely joyously the same.

MIA: The poster girl for modern day agit prop, rapper and provocateur MIA grew up in Sri Lanka and West London. Her unique take on agit prop has inspired a host of other artists, including Santigold and Noga Erez. Her most recent album, A.I.M is out now and she is currently touring. She will be playing the Boomtown Festival on the 13th August.

Christine And The Queens: Heloise Le Tissier, aka Christine and The Queens, created a splash in the UK in 2016 with her single 'Tilted', taken from her first English language album, Chaleur Humaine. A pop star in her native France, Le Tissier's androgynous image and proclaimed pansexuality marked her out as a breath of fresh air and the dramatic and sophisticated electro pop of Chaleur Humaine marked it as a classic.
