Moderation

Florence + The Machine have been teasing fans in preparation of the new single, 'Moderation', for a couple of weeks now on social media. The band are on the Australian leg of the High As Hope tour at the moment, and phone footage of them performing the song live quickly leaked out. What was equally tantalising, not to mention funny, was the repeated changing of the title of the song on set lists. 'Meditation' was one, I think 'Train Station' might have been another...

But the mystery is over now, and 'Moderation' has arrived.

On one hand, it sounds nothing like any of the tracks on High As Hope, but on the other hand it is definitely pure Florence + The Machine, with Welch very much in touch with her soul girl side but also employing a trademark ferocity and emotional honesty. The two combine in a song that, structurally, feels very 1960s Stax soul record but which has a core darkness to it that feels almost like a sonic exorcism. In this sense, it's very apt that the B Side is called 'Haunted House'.

I think this is going to prove to be an absolute triumph of the live set. The clips that have leaked out suggest it's going down well too.
